screen print

The day started with my partner being late... not fab.
it continued with having to strip another screen and finish of the work that should already have been done. But the poster got a though out cohesive design that hopefully will translate into a bright and happy design, the use of the modernistic typeface with a contemporary layout  basing the print idea

folding a bag

in the crit with ali he said that it would be cool with a breathing bag or stress ball and after looking into how to print on a stress ball that seemed quite difficult.

I found this guide on how to do it that we will need if we are to print it instead of printing on to one. the initial test was made using brown paper but with the look of the other elements, I am afraid that it is going to wash out the bright colours we decided on.
the folding method looks good but it needs to be produced in a white thin paper. because of normal printing paper it too thick.

Ali Hansen Critique

Ali Hansen Critique

Continuity is good
Push forward the idea of carrying an object round - print onto a stress ball/whoopee cushion/breathing bag
Mr Bingo whoopee cushion design research
Think of more playful interactive outcomes than a poster - helps you do the things we're trying to help with
Add perferated edges to rationale to showcase the idea
Love quotes on the back of the poster, tough quotes on front of the poster
Feature in a student magazine or the metro
Reaching out to everyone
Activities to do whilst on the tube that help you relax

Make animations more prominent within the project

the idea of brown paper bags or stress ball is interesting we are gonna try to implement that in the idea.

the whoopie cushion is well fun.

the idea that you would find it at a student magazine is interesting as you could tear out the card with the perforated edge and you could take out the card and keep it.

Feedback:

  • Love the colour scheme
  • Takeaway posters are really cool
  • Animations are a little rigid
  • Very contemporary and modern which is nice - typeface works really well
  • Fits well with the target audience
  • Some people might not know what the stickers symbols actually are so could you have a really small caption around the edge of the stickers as to what they actually are?
  • Good use of colour theory, not in your face but still stands out
  • Presented in an engaging and interesting way
  • Hashtags say though love instead of tough love
  • R u really trying cover try without overlapping text.
  • Calming effect could be communicated more effectively if the curved lines were animated left to right
  • Stop procrastinating image is fantastic
  • Good idea having the stickers around the university as little reminders
  • Good shape proportions on the sticker
  • Why yellow?
  • Can you combine the breathing exercise diagrams with the text?
  • The symbols on the mirrors do not clearly communicate if you do not know their origin. If you just simply Puy breathe below or something this could help
  • Like the colour scheme.

the animations do have a ridgit feel over them but I have yet to figure out how to make them smoother will take that in to consideration when we continue the development. Though we just learned it so we will see. I had to do all of the work as my teammate did fuck all.
we will add some instructions with the breathing gifs
the ide of the stickers is they are simple and clean as to make you focus on the things that make you calm down.

screen exposing

The day started with my partner being late... not fab.
it continued with having to strip another screen and finish of the work that should already have been done. But the poster got a though out cohesive design that hopefully will translate into a bright and happy design, the use of the modernistic typeface with a contemporary layout basing the print idea on being colorful and bright but based on strict typography with the sans serif typeface Gotham as it is easy to create pictures with that category of typefaces.
the exposing went alright but one of the screens peeled off so the print is not going to be perfect, but that might be a nice effect with the strict typography and the imperfect print.

logo type

For the logo, we wanted to keep it fairly simple as the idea revolves around typography and the logotype should not be overly fluffy and elaborate. The typeface used in Gotham as it has a contemporary look to it and is neutral enough to go with anything.

this logotype is based on the idea that you are forced to get help in order to function so it has a tight tracking and kerning.

after asking friends and family what they do to relax there were some people that said that they relaxed with doing things like knitting and crossword puzzles. The use of the alignment of the o's creates a movement that is interesting but the end result is a bit too square for the idea that we had.

this looks shit. you can't read it because of the overlap is too small.

the layout is interesting and the use of the tight leading. creates a cohesive look to the two words that showcases the idea that we have gone with. it does look a bit uneven in the distribution of the negative space.

the kerning is off as the g and have a normal spacing but the v and e have a tight kerning. the o takes too much attention and the idea would probably work better if the two words did not differ in size with just one letter.

it all seems off. the  L is off balance and the v and g are just bearly touching. Just no.

the idea references the other design but with the two o's like this, it looks too much like two wedding rings. the thickness of the typeface is nice though. It is a bit bolder as this idea is not based around tiptoeing around the theme.

the use of the knock out effect works better here but it looks quite messy and the focal point of it becomes the middle part and you lose the actual title.

taking the inspiration from the fourth one this design is based around connecting the two words and make it into one. inorder to fir it i had to scale up the love but and it looks shit.

With the bolder type, it works way better. Both Mia and I agreed to go with this one. as it is simple yet impactful.

this one is too confusing

type motivation layout

We brainstormed some slightly passive aggressive motivational sayings.

Grow a pair

Don’t be upset

Stop it

Just do it

Get it together

Stop drinking

That won’t help

Get out of bed

Do your work

Stop complaining

Get a grip

don’t be a bitch

Just shut up about it

Stop procrastinating

Are you really trying?

Do it anyways

Get of your ass

Are you really ill?

The Key to happiness s low expectations

lower.

Nope, even lower.

there you go

Suck it up

Do it anyway

I made a simple desition in using an existing typeface because how versatile the type is to be on the poster. also with the amout the work that is put into each card it would take ages if not.
the layout of the poster is purely based on placing the cards the poster is divided into the two sections the fun part is that the divide is opposite to the layout of the logotype.

The poster is made up by individual cards in order to have the design showcase that there are individual cards it is laid out like a chess board with every other being a solid colour.

In the research, it was obvious that most motivational quotes have a definitive feminine touch to it. So in this task, there was put in a conscious desition to have it less frilly and a bit blunter.

The cards had to be cohesive yet different, in order to have a create a consistent visual effect to the cards they all use the same typeface, Gotham. this typeface was chosen because it has a contemporary shape that has a blunt personality in that it is unapologetic in its edges.

The cards went through slight development in that there was made two iterations of the cards to find how to illustrate what they say. So in the case of the get a grip card the visual impact is derived from literally having the type being griped together. Ignorer to make it more readable the straight one was picked as the angled one is a bit too warped and busy. With the stop procrastination card, the aim was to make it difficult to read as to force the reader to use more time and therefore procrastinating. The poster is not to take itself too seriously so the visual outcome consists of us din knocking out, large tracking and kerning and large contrasts. The balance of the busy cards to the minimal ones makes sure that the poster is not too overpowering.

pattern and crit

in the crit Pat and Ben suggested that we make an interactive poster where people take a card from the poster.
the idea mixes the post-it wall idea and card idea.
Make a stack of postcards for people to take away
Activity on the front, how it helps you on the back
Positive and fluffy vs tough love
Rational vs emotional
Yellow - positive, orange - tough love
Make a poster with perforated edges for people to take the smaller postcards away
TOUGH LOVE
The poster is to have a pattern on the back of it with text on the front.

after our research people find patterns with rounded edges so using a wave pattern showcases that. we could use this as to reference the gif I made.
rhythmic patterns also have a calming effect on people this pattern achieves that.
the pattern also creates an illusion of depth in the design. but is is a bit too much of a rigid grid and the shapes make my head ace a bit.

this variation of a pattern for the back cover is based on the curved relaxing theory we found and it also has a hypnotic pattern.
the final pattern consists of a mixture of waves and the circle design. the idea of it is based on water, with waves and water ripples. this is because water is a calming element the rhythmic pattern of the waves and circles creates a slightly hypnotic feel to it.

all initial ideas

"three" ideas

post it sandwich board
The idea is based around you not feeling alone when you are. The concept is based on you writing what helps you de-stress.

The problem with this idea is that it could promote bad habits that make you more stressed.
The idea is good but humans are flawed.

what is the project about
make people handle stress

what is the idea
make people share what makes them de-stress

how will you make it
wall of post-it with a pen so people can write down what they do

how will you make it look good
maybe use vinyl for the text
have a happy colour palette

how will you use Instagram in an interesting way
we can have close-ups of what people have written
use timelapse

Stickers
The idea is based on getting motivation in unexpected places. it could be a sticker pack that you can order and place in odd places so to give motivation to other students.

the possible problem is that these stickers could be left unseen and no one would see them

what is the project about
spread joy in unexpected places

what is the idea
you can buy a packet of motivational stickers either tough love or just love.

how will you make it
it would be a sticker
we would make a sticker

how will you make it look good
we would print it in the print room

how will you use Instagram in an interesting way
base it almost on a scavenger hunt so people send in pictures of where they have found the stickers
we would make a gif with the different stickers

cards
the idea of cards has two possible results, either making postcards that you can send to family, friends or yourself in order to motivate them or yourself. the other idea with the cards is to have them more as reminders that you can keep in your notebook or wallet so you feel motivated to push through the stress and focus on your end goal. It could also work if you were to forget about them and found them much later on.

they would be fragile and could be destroyed

what is the project about?
Spread joy to stressed out people you love

what is the idea
you can by a pack of postcards with a design on one side and a small quote on the other side

pins

the idea os the pins is a mix between the second card idea and the stickers. in that, you have encouraging messages that you give out to the world.
calming shapes would be used in other media with animation.
The problem with this is whether people would use it.

what is the project about
spread joy to your surroundings

what is the idea
the pins are to have motivational quotes that other people can read and have a laugh about.
