rationale

The idea is based on creating a product where students can find the motivation to go through with all of the projects and handling stress. The products consist of a perforated poster that is made up of several different sayings so that you can keep going and you would get help whether you need a bit of tough love or just motivation. The poster is screen printed double-sided and perforated so that students can rip off a piece to help them along. The poster would deteriorate as people take the wallet-friendly cards. In the design, there is also a breathing bag for those extra extreme cases. in addition to some stickers that would be used to stick around to give some motivation to people that might not know that they need it, by placing them around in odd places.

The poster and additional elements are to be bought in by universities and schools so that students feel seen. The colours used are cheerful colours such as orange and yellow. The colours represent the sun which is a thing most students should see more of. In the research, we found out that the calming shapes are curvy as they do not have any. so in the bag and on Instagram, there are several elements consisting of rounded shapes and moving in calming patterns. In the reserch, there were lots of motivational products but most of them were quite frilly and not that neutral. This design is, therefore, playing with an abstract visual identity so that any student would be inclined to take a card.

final outcome

The poster screen printed on white card, the reason for screenprinting is that the design is quite digital and by screen printing the design there are imperfections achieved so that the poster has a more humble vibe over it. you are more inclined to ruin something when it is not perfect. The card was chosen for its colour and sturdy ness as these cards are to be carried around in peoples wallets, pockets or whatever else. the crisp white card also creates a strong contrast to the colours so that they pop and showcase the vibrant nature of the colours. Hese colours were chosen as they are bright and yellow and orange is fun colours in that they are colours related and people often think of brighter times. The orange is quite harsh though as it is supposed to deliver the tough love. the kinder side is displayed with the bright yellow.

The design was changed from the one-sided poster to the double-sided with both types of cards from some feedback from Ben and Pat. This has had a huge impact on the task as it has halved in size and it has more  impact with the though love being orange

The work is supported by varying interpretations of typography layout. the reason for this is that different people can find something that appeals to them and they can take that exact card. Most of the cards have a direct link to the type setups and the saying. Like the get, it together has really tight kerning as to illustrate that you have to get it together.

The layout of the elements is based on a centered header with elements in grids underneath.

evaluation

the main problem with this task is that my partner was lazy af. she did almost nothing and the only way that I could get her to work is to set her task like a babysitter, that is not my job. this project could have been fantastic for me I think by it has been completely ruined by the lack of involvement throughout the brief. If I were supposed to be nice about her contribution I might say that she did approximately 10% that is NOT enough. what she did do was not even to a standard that I was alright with so it was changed to fit within the aesthetic. she also did not bother sharing any opinions on the designs, she just agreed with whatever I argued for, she did not even try to contradict and find something that she would care about.

this brief said to create something that put something positive into the world. This has been achieved by creating this interactive poster with additional items. this task has been taken past the obvious by using a different visual language that is normal for motivational designs. The boldness of the design using sharp edges as to visualize the tough love side. It is quite obvious to make a poster, but in making it interactive and made up by cards it goes beyond the obvious. Within this project, there have been a lot of different items produced to explore the unexpected.

The theme is explored by allowing people to find what sort of motivation they need in order to do their work. The idea of motivation is often approached in gloves on approach, this task is based on getting tough love and gloves on approach so that you will get a kick start. The problem with this is that it might be a bit unclear in what is attempted. The task that was set went slightly against the theme in that it is based on Instagram slides, in reality, this would work best as an offline project. The Instagram slides works to inform what this project is about. The breathing gif works quite nicely in that it showcases a way to deal with stress and take some time for yourself.

From peer reviews, they have mostly been positive the main problem that they have expressed is that people might be afraid to rip apart the poster and it could do with some instructions on the poster. the main problem with instructions being added is that it could lead to a bit busy header. the other thing is that the perforating does not work that well on this paper, but we needed to use this paper so that the cards have a bit of hold and can be handled a bit. If this project were to be produced there would be better perforated so that the cards would be easy to take away. The peers also said that the Instagram slides showcased what was aimed to achieve. One of the problems found is that the stickers do not have the same color as the rest, that could easily be adjusted if the print room was not that busy.

The final outcome is constrained by the poster format if this was to be done again the booklet would have been the one to be produced as it is more personal and you would feel a bit better about tearing apart a piece. The bag and stickers seem a bit out of place and would need an instruction card so that it wouldn't look like an afterthought.

The production could be a lot better in that it was close to impossible to get the two sides to align properly, so all of the attempts have some imperfections, the good thing about that is that you can see that they are hand made. The use of the varied typography work on the poster is a bit too busy at times, it might have worked better if more of them were simpler. The bag is not in the best condition either as the tough love logo should have been moved downwards.

In order to further develop this project, there should have been made a simple typeface so that it could have more of its own look. The use of the existing typeface was a bit of a cop-out because of time and lack of collaboration in the group.

instagram

The initial gif was made in the first week, as to give the gif more context there were simple instructions added so that people could follow them. the First attempt was made with the type being in upper and lowercase, but looking through the poster most of the ards are made in uppercase so that was changed as to achieve a cohesive look to it. So to reference some of the simpler card design the tracking was exaggerated as to give the otherwise aggressive uppercase some space to breathe.

This wave gif was initially quite calm in the waves but that was changed as to achieve a more efficient pattern to it because Instagram is not a platform where people are patient. Ideally, it should be a bit more busy to achieve this but it is what it is.

As to start the Instagram slides we figured out what we needed and the idea is based on statistic, survey, branding, description followed with showcasing of the produced elements. so for the first one this fact that 83% of 18-24-year-olds have said that they have been so overwhelmed that they have been unable to cope in the past year. This design was edited to the leading became proportionate to the size of the text and also made the text justified by adjusting the size of the type, this works in this context because there is a limited amount of text that is going to be there. In addition, the source was added to give the slide some logos.

This design I also had to change in order to not have it look like a warning. This description of the project was initially very minimal and forgetful so it was edited to reference the other elements, this slide references the initial shapes and the stickers. the text was shortened so that is is more condensed. The use of the pattern draws the eye in and would lead you to want to scroll along.

As part of the research, Pat put up an Instagram poll on the LAU graphics Instagram and for that there was made an image inspired by one of the cards that had part of that saying in it. Initially, this poll was yellow but in order to keep with the idea that the slides were to be every other with the two colours, it was made square and orange. At the end on the poll, screenshots were taken that was placed on the slide as to showcase the poll taking.

perforating the poster

i spent the day finding out how to perforate a poster, I first tried Rosie's perforator but it was a bit dull and did not work that well on such thick paper.  it left a torn look that destroyed the other side of the paper. I also tried Ben's idea of having it as a care package packaged in the bag but it looks off, this idea would have to been planned from the start.

in the print room, they have a nice perforator that I spent some time getting used to until I attempted to do it on the final poster. When I came to the end of it I managed to slip up and it is not that great but you get the idea.

I also took some photos of the items that can be stored in the bag once you have received the poster.

paper

i have worked with finding the final poster and deciding to go with the cards and not cartridge as the card is bright white which makes the colour stand out more and also it is a thicker paper that would last longer in a wallet. Mia was not there so I made the desition on my own with the help of my peers.

black is not happening

Watercolor paper is too textured and does not feel right.

Files and gifs

I was supposed to put up Instagram today but all of the files were the wrong format since my partner apparently does not get formats. one of the gifs were not how we discussed it and that was one of the few things she had to do in addition to edit a gif that I made earlier, that none worked out right though. this was the type of gif i got but still in the raw file.

I sent her a message and she took two hours to answer because she is not in today. so I made it so that I could publish the Instagram slides. I added the type to it so that it was not just a gif without an explanation.

I changed the type to all caps in keeping with the designs with large tracking on the poster.

booklet

I had an idea that the cards could be produced in a booklet format so that you can give out cards to people that might need it. the booklet would be the size of a credit card and the cards are to be perforated and the booklet would be bound with the Japanese hole punch stick so that the cards would not have to be folded because that would not work that well on such thick card.
Bubbles
Ss to add some whimsey there were sleeves designed for bubbles, but the problem is that the initial container is blue so in an attempt to make it white it just looks unfinished. the idea would work really well as an element to get with the other elements as it has a calming effect and also it is something to take your mind off all of the things you have to do if you need it.

Booklet
this idea was derived from this book that I had when I was a child where you ripped out postcards and they said what out to do with them. this tiny booklet would be about credit card size because that would allow a tiny spleen that would be stitched and the cards would be perforated so they would be easy to rip out.

accordion  small
The first variation was based on the digitally printed poster that leads to a cleaner fold, but at the same time quite impersonal, as this project is based on how you can and should do better and find motivation it makes sense for it to be made by screenprinting. The folding length ways works nicely as it is more similar to greeting cards. this format would be interesting to have in freshers giftbag.

accordion huge
this version of the accordion is suited for public spaces, in reality, there would be a lottery ticket system so when you take one there is a roll on the top so that it does not require a ladder to get all of the cards.

the other idea was to make a Constantina book with the same concept that you would give out cards or leave them in different places.

just a tiny tester

I made in an in design document with all of the pages this would be cool for a booklet

poster gif

I sent the last couple of hours creating a gif of the poster with it being torn down and one with it turning to the orange poster. The idea of having it being used and pulled down worked the best as it showed how the poster is to be interacted with. The other one can be shown in the other photo with the bag and stickers. the gif had to be made as stop motion, the problem with that is that the shadows created a bit too much movement in it, but I'm past caring since I feel like I have done everything. you get to see how you are to interact with it which is the point of this slide.

They do both works ok except for the fact that the camera got sightly moved whilst working on it so both animations have a jump in them.

Bag finish

I got some feedback from my peers on the different bag designs and they all agreed to either take the one with the big symbol or the one with waves and circles. i also tester some different types of papir and came to the conclusion that the enforced newsprint would work best with the colour and the weight of the paper.

I also tested out the idea of the bag being made out of tracing paper it looks cool but the color is lost as the paper is not opake.
